When Children Play The Piano

Three years ago
I quit going to church
I walked out without a sign to follow
I saw God every now and then but he looked different
Instead of an old white man with a beard
He was a stray dog that I named Bill who came around every couple of days and followed me everywhere
And church took on a different form too
Instead of a stage with people plugged in and praising in perfect harmony
It became my backyard with ant beds and the occasional butterfly bringing the good news

And inside my house with dishes piling up and goldfish spilled under the table all of heaven sat on the couch waiting for the children to play the piano
